In a blog the last posting is what people read first. How you look today is who you are. Like for any stock on the market, the only value that matters is today's.
My answer to Wishbone comes before his post..Like a movie in reverse.
The funniest movie I've ever saw was a reel with Chalie Chaplin shown by mistake in rewind. The ice cream spilled from the cone onto this lady's bare back was shown climbing from her back into the cone..

personals...
This is the problem..who reads?
Less than one year in the States, I put an ad in the NYRB Personals. Nobody answered. But one of my few friends called me [even before the review was on stands] to laugh because he had seen my ad. My Anonymous ad ...
[The automatic spell checker offered to change NYRB with Nerve...Funny. Who knows? an ad in Nerve might have been more successful. If there was a Nerve]

Who reads blog archives? When I feel empty with nothing to enter, I should repost an archived moment?

From time to time prophets
The prophets read the present and provide a scenario for the future based on their beliefs. The natural and historical systemic advantages of America might not be enough to prevent decline.
The political class should study the facts and forget about beliefs. But now it seems not reading and believing is the poll winning stand.

coming to America
People used to ask me as I arrived "How is it to be free?" . I was embarrassed to admit -nothing. I had debts to pay.
Clarifying article. I quote since it might be archived:
In the 20th century two versions of freedom emerged in America. The modern liberal version emphasizes civil liberties, political participation and social justice. It is the version formally extolled by the federal government, debated by philosophers and taught in schools; it still informs the American judicial system. And it is the version most treasured by foreigners who struggle for freedom in their own countries.
But most ordinary Americans view freedom in quite different terms. In their minds, freedom has been radically privatized. Its most striking feature is what is left out: politics, civic participation and the celebration of traditional rights, for instance. Freedom is largely a personal matter having to do with relations with others and success in the world.
Freedom, in this conception, means doing what one wants and getting one's way. It is measured in terms of one's independence and autonomy, on the one hand, and one's influence and power, on the other. It is experienced most powerfully in mobility - both socioeconomic and geographic.

vw ad
The suicide ad reminds me of the bicycle I had in college. It was a Diamant. German make. After the bombing of a Hanoi warehouse the only item left standing was a Diamant and every viet student at my college wanted to buy my bike.
At the end of my last year I sold it to one of them. He was so determined to seal the deal that he insisted to buy me a shot of vodka over the deal. Someone had taught him that such was our custom. Only after a vodka drink the deal woul become inexorably final.
This guy who had not gone in a bar outside Vietnam took me in a bodega and we drank. Diamant forever.

history of the city...
Went to New York Historical Society to see the Hamilton exhibition. Not much of an exhibition but surprised by the large attendance. At the library, an 1880s article discussing the city grid established in 1810s.... Complaining that the the blocks are shorter along the length of the island. They should have been turned 90 degrees since circulation is North South.
Still cannot figure out how it would have matter...Maybe it did before the subway.

parking
Today I decided to explore my neighborhood with the AIA guide in hand. Looking at buildings two blocks away from where I live, on a street I used to park everyday six, seven years ago, I discovered a ten feet wide park tucked between brownstones. Had been there for twenty years...How many tickets did I get on that street?

a clear voice
Paul Krugman's last Friday column was so true, I shouted of pleasure. But he should stay away from invective and personal attacks. He should remain an unassailble economic expert. Telling the truth. Exposing the truth.
Stramge! In his firs year at Sloan he was my professor. Many of my colleagues were in awe of his intellect. Not me -confused by his fast talk and diagrams he used to change and correct all the time. Probably now those admirers are mad at his politics, while I am thankful for his steaady and clear left wing position.
