Spring is here with buds and flowers and smells. Perfect sunny days. And you get no boost.

By now there are things I know I will never get to do. Will never get to bed a duchess, not even a marquise

My mother in law died six years ago. In the last year of her life she belonged to a neighborhood club for old people. Every year they still send her a best wishes card for her birthday. I don't have the heart to send it back.

Saul Bellow
I spent six weeks reading "Mr Sammler's Planet". At that time my English vocabulary was around 1,500 words. I liked it probably just because I succeeded to understand some sentences. As this blog testifies I should have had a more modest start. Say Oscar Wilde.

The postings are not about my daily life. If they were they would probably more interesting or even exciting(1-ha!). But I don't have the courage to confront in public my daily problems. In fact I write only about things that do not matter much. On the same level as solving crosswords. And never getting to solve the entire puzzle.
(1)- Conceited! Am I trying the excuse -what I am writing may be boring, but you should see what I do or make?- Obviously writing a blog is a form of self exposing and who would expose himself without looking for approval or admiration.

victor

Is this your cousin? Found his picture on the internet.
First in his math class, sealed [and sailed to] his fame as the family genius by dropping out of college claiming they could not teach him anything he already did not know.
Became a journeyman on construction sites where he was bending rebars. Always correcting the record. His letters to the editors were published in newspapers from Pravda to PLO publications to Le Monde.

Portes de l'orient
In restaurants in NYC they seat couples on opposite ends of a table. Where I grew up they seat couples on adjoining sides -close to each other. Over there the important action is not what's on the table but what is going on under the table.

dimanche apres-midi
From her old age home in Koln a friend of my mother called to congratulate..Strange people from far away think I still exist, that I have a life worth congratulations. I got this week an invitation to a wedding in St. Louis from a friend I haven't seen in fifteen years. Today a friend from the old country send me a new year? best wishes...Haven't seen him in twenty years. We could cross path on the street and not recognize each other.
News of my demise have not crossed the rivers ond oceans... Or maybe they try to prove to themselves they still have friends.

bonjour
Usually I do not write such personal posts. But since nobody visits my site, let me mark this week. My mother forgot to wish me happy birthday. My daughter did not care to acknowledge it. I took my wife for surgery to the hospital. When I tried to take his leash off, my dog bit me.

paradise
Paradise Island. Sunday afternoon. Empty beach. Nobody in the water. Sunny, cold and no waves- a sad sandy desert. The only open joint offers orange juice to lengthen your life by one minute. Everything else is deep fried. I am drawn to the only place that seems animated. Someone things accompanied by some version of orchestral karaoke. Sinatra of course. The boardwalk in front the counter is full. Beer drinking over sixty-five hot gals and guys. Dancing and gesticulating. Happy and requesting songs from the fifties or beyond...

I think Krugman is not reading the Maestro right. It is long since Greenspan has sided with the bully in power. He clearly allowed the nineties stock market bubble to develop....My reading is that after so many years in economics, Greenspan knows that nothing really matters. Greenspan is not failing the truths of his profession since by now he knows there is no profession...

Bricks and Brownstone
This is New York I like most. But then I remember my first day in America, in Baltimore Greyhound station. I was scared by the ugliness and uniformity of what now I realize were brownstones. At that time I had in mind A Taste of Honey and all the sad angry British movies of the 60s. And coming to New York to Rego Park the following week...I annoyed my guest saying it was absolutely ugly.
